News from St Peter's GAA Band
On Friday night last, the 1st of December, St.Peter’s GAA Hall in Mary Street was almost full for the annual band concert. Patrons enjoyed a varied and exciting programme of music provided by the club band and a number of local artistes. The Band opened the evening with a selection of music from various film scores. This was followed by band member Nicola Magee playing the harp. Nicola is a pupil of Mrs Eithne Benson and those present were treated to an enchanting performance of a most beautiful instrument. Nicola’s second piece ‘Ebbing Tide’ was a most soothing Friday night antidote to the winter blues. Following a selection of popular music from the band Patricia McCaughey charmed the crowd with the ever popular ‘The Kerry Dance’ and ‘The Virgin Slumber Song’ and was accompanied by the band for the great favourite Panis Angelicus. After some light refreshment the concert resumed with ‘Salute to the Maidens’ a piece arranged by band Musical Director Andy Tohill which includes many well known Irish tunes along with a few others from further a field. Soloist Sharon Cole had the audience enthralled with her versions of ‘Never Again’ and ‘My Ship’ Next up were a group of young musicians making their début, they were the members of the junior band who have been attending lessons in the club since April ’05. Conducted by Raymond Magee they played ‘The Regal March’ and ‘Jingle Bells’ and were warmly applauded by the audience. To mark the occasion the junior members were presented with a medal by Band President, Barney Carr. Band member David Clarke demonstrated the depth of his musical talent when he played the piano to a hushed hall. He played two contrasting pieces ‘Arabesque’ by Debussy and ‘Feeling Good’ a ragtime number. Fear a’ tí for the night and Band Chairman Hugh Carr then called on Andy Tohill to make a presentation to Malachy Heatley who recently retired from the band following many years of loyal service. The Fear a’ tí thanked the guest artistes and accompanist Aeveen Tohill for their wonderful contribution to the night and thanked the patrons for their support and all those who contributed in any way to the success of the evening. He went on to announce that the Band now had a website www.stpetersgaaband.com expertly designed by Shaun Luckie and linked to the club website. The
Band closed the proceedings with two short Christmas numbers ‘Mary’s
Boy Child’ and ‘We Wish you a Merry Christmas’. Following
sustained applause the Band played a march ‘Aces High’ as
an encore. All who attended were agreed that it was a superb evening
of music provided by local talent.
